How does parental allowance work?

Parental allowance replaces part of the lost net income after the birth.

The amount depends on:
  • Income before the birth
  • Income while receiving parental allowance
  • The chosen type of parental allowance (Basic, Plus, partnership bonus)
  • Parental allowance is not a flat rate
  • There are minimum and maximum amounts
Key facts:
  • Basic parental allowance: €300 – €1,800 per month
  • Parental allowance Plus: €150 – €900 per month
  • Income before birth is only considered up to €2,770 net
Types of parental allowance

Basic parental allowance

  • Generally 65% of the loss of net income
  • Can be paid for up to 12 months
  • Higher replacement rate for lower incomes
  • Maximum amount is capped – even for higher incomes

Parental allowance Plus

  • Monthly amount may be lower
  • Can be paid for twice as long
  • Often advantageous if working part-time during parental leave
  • Capped at half of the theoretical basic parental allowance

Partnership bonus

  • Calculated like parental allowance Plus
  • Requirement: both parents work part-time at the same time
  • Only possible in certain months
  • Not automatic – must be applied for separately
How the calculation works (simplified)
  • Net income before birth is capped
  • Income while receiving parental allowance reduces the difference
  • The replacement rate is applied to this difference
  • Minimum and maximum limits are then applied
  • For parental allowance Plus, an additional special cap applies

Example: “If you earned X € before birth and Y € while receiving parental allowance, the allowance is calculated based on the difference.”

Important notes & typical pitfalls
  • Parental allowance is tax-free but subject to the progression clause
  • It must be declared in the income tax return
  • The amount shown here is the gross payment – the final tax effect may differ
  • The exact payment depends on the official notice
  • This calculator is non‑binding
Note: Working while receiving parental allowance can reduce the monthly amount, but when using parental allowance Plus it can increase the total payout.
